Magnétoencéphalographie : cartographier le cerveau à la milliseconde prèsMagnetoencephalography: mapping the brain to the millisecond

Acquisition and processing of magnetic and electrical brain activity in humans, for both clinical and cognitive research.

Complementary to electroencephalography (EEG), MEG offers millisecond time resolution — the only way to track the dynamic unfolding of brain processes — and accurate localisation of the sources of activity, largely unaffected by the conductivity of head tissues. It therefore makes it possible to map brain networks in real time, both in patients (epilepsy, cognitive disorders) and in healthy subjects (perception, language, memory).

The MEG platform is dedicated to the acquisition and processing of magnetic and electrical brain activity in humans, as part of pre-surgical evaluation in a day hospital, as well as clinical research and cognition projects.

The platform makes its equipment and the expertise of its staff available to researchers and clinical teams for data acquisition and processing.

Magnetoencephalography captures the workings of brain networks with millisecond temporal precision and excellent spatial resolution. Since magnetic fields are little affected by the tissues surrounding the brain, MEG has unique properties for identifying and localising sources of brain activity.

It can be used simultaneously with electroencephalography (EEG) to produce highly precise mappings of the brain.

The IRM-INT Center is the magnetic resonance imaging platform of the Institut de Neurosciences de la Timone (INT, UMR 7289, CNRS / Aix-Marseille University). Housed since 2016 at CERIMED (European Center for Research in Medical Imaging, Timone Health Campus), it is equipped with a 3 Tesla scanner dedicated to structural and functional brain imaging, in animals and humans alike. The complementarity of the INT's fMRI with MEG — millimetre spatial resolution on one side, millisecond time resolution on the other — enables Marseille teams to combine anatomical localisation with the dynamics of brain networks.
